Cake Poker started off with an ambitious project: to build a stand alone site that was better than all other online poker rooms. The good news is that the software they came up with is certainly industry-standard and the customer service and banking facilities are excellent.
But like other small sites who try to start from scratch, Cake Poker suffers from low peak numbers compared to other sites. The availability of real money games is limited and it is only worth downloading and setting up an account if you're only interested in playing either limit or no-limit hold'em. Occasionally, pot limit omaha games get going, but they are nothing to get excited about.
On the other hand, they are gradually building and since they are anxious to attract new clients as well as retaining existing ones, Cake Poker offers a number of attractive promotions periodically.
The software is a mixed bag. Some reviewers raised concerns about network stability, which is not encouraging, particularly for a small site. But as always, the technicians are always working to rectify bug as they're identified. The table graphics are very good, yet the lobby can be a bit tedious (and at times, almost illogical) to navigate through. A face lift could be in order in the near future.
Generally, reports indicate that the quality of the players on Cake Poker is relatively soft, even into the medium stakes. Cake Poker could be a good site for those looking to try out different sites at minimal expense, but the serious players would invariably end up playing elsewhere. Nonetheless, a site exhibiting moderate growth and worth a look.
